It is a bit of clichéd armchair criticism oft-leveled against “The Lord Of The Rings”; why don’t they just give the ring to the Eagles and have them fly over and drop it into the fires of Mount Doom? Click, boom, done, that settles that, and we’re all back home in time for elevenses. It is in fact some small rite of passage for anyone with even a casual surface understanding of the story; pointing out with a chuckle such a seemingly obvious “plot hole” and really hoping someone got fired for that. What no one seems to consider is the dark wrath and horrifying destruction that could be unleashed upon all of Middle Earth, by a squadron of Eagles bearing the power of the One Ring.
